At two years old, Ethan is such a sweet, happy little boy. He is energetic, yet fairly laid back. He listens to us well and just wants to please, most of the time. He definitely tests and pushes up against our limits from time to time, though.
Two year olds are so fun because of their energy and enthusiasm. He loves all things motorized. Trucks and trains are his favorite, but he will also get crazy excited about cars, buses, motorcycles, airplanes, helicopters. He yells, jumps up and down, and claps when he sees big ones!
His favorite book is 100 Trucks and his favorite song is The Wheels on the Truck (like Wheels on the Bus). His favorite toy is his wooden train set and he falls asleep at night with little trucks in his hands. This boy LOVES trucks and trains.
He loves putting puzzles together and building with all sizes of blocks. Of course, his favorite puzzles is a big pieced truck puzzle...
His favorite foods are noodles (noonoos) and nuts. He wakes up in the morning asking for nuts for breakfast and does a little five minute dancing, yelling celebration when I tell him we are having noodles for dinner.
In the last few months he has begun to enjoy coloring and painting more. It can now hold his attention longer than two minutes. He has also began to tell me what it is he is drawing, which seems like a big developmental step in using his imagination.
This week he told me he was drawing his eye and actually drew a circle with a colored in circle inside it - it looked like an eye! But he usually draws trucks and houses.
Ethan is very active. His favorite things to do are jump and throw a ball. He loves being outside, and now that we are in a warmer climate loves playing in the water.
Ethan has excellent communication skills, but he does not yet rely soley on spoken language to communicate. He didn't start using verbal language until a week or so before his birthday, making him a fairly late talker. Once he started using words, he progressed at an amazing rate, adding three to four new ones a day. Now, five weeks after his birthday he says words very clearly and often. His most used words are mommy, daddy, truck, yep, quack (for all birds), ball, whoowhoo (for trains), more, up, down, out, Malley, Ted, night night, mine, eat, nuts, noonoos (noodles), DooDoo (Uncle Curtis), Eeee (Ethan), house
Because he was a late talker, he became very good at communicating nonverbally. He has used sign language very well since he was 10 months old and in the last six months began making up his own signs to express what he wanted to say. He created signs for again, airplane, fish, wheels, drink, OK, I don't know, open.
After he started talking, he is still using signs to communicate and still creating new ones. This surprised me as I thought once he began speaking he would stop signing. It is interesting to see what words he decides to speak and what he signs. Also, in the last two weeks he has started stringing two words together. It cracks me up when he says one word and then signs the other.
We have decided that Ethan definitely sees himself as a chief, rather than an Indian. Or as his grandpa says, Ethan is bossy! He is always telling everyone in the room where to sit, where to go, what to color, what to wear, when to cross their legs, when to drink... He is a man of routine, so once we do anything one way Ethan is quick to let us know if we ever deviate from it.
I love so many things about my sweet little two year old boy, but probably my very most favorite is his super laid back demeanor. He has a funny expression in his speech that makes him sound like he is too cool for everything, like he is just one cool cat. I ask him "E, are you just the cutest boy?" He shrugs his shoulders, says in a laid back way, "Yep"...kinda like "Of course Mom, but it's no big deal." He is a funny kid and I love him so!
