Summer of the Sea

Starting in the spring and into the summer, our kids became obsessed with the ocean and the animals that live in it.

Well, honestly it was Ethan that fell absolutely in love with marine animals and the ocean and the other two get excited because he does.

The obsession was full - they played with ocean toys, pretended they were ocean creatures, read ocean books, watched ocean videos, asked ocean questions (Aaron and I feel like we are experts at marine mammals at this point), and made up their own ocean related games.

They even ate ocean animal snacks.

Ethan has decided that instead of police man,  he wants to be a deep sea diver when he grows up.  And he spends all his time in pools swimming underwater practicing.

The timing of this obsession was perfect, because we spent a lot of time at the ocean this summer (I am counting the brown Gulf of Mexico as ocean, they don't know the difference!).

When we were at the beach, they tried to catch animals that live in the water

and find the animals that just live near the water.

Ethan and Kelsey did at least.  The little guy just played in the water

and was happy to finally get the body board to himself.

They wanted to go to the zoo all summer, mainly for all the fish tanks and the California seals, which is where we spent most of our time (happily in the AC and shade!!).

We saved the visit to the Houston Aquarium until the very last day of summer, so the build up to it was exciting!

And definitely worth it.  Even though they didn't have a sperm whale in any of the tanks, all the kids had a blast seeing many of the animals we had been reading about all summer.

And getting to actually touch the sting rays topped it all off.

Ethan's fixation on marine life is pretty awesome.  Learning all about it has led to a lot of fun for the whole family.
